The City has just made it possible for residents to acquire an overnight on-street parking permit for their guests.  City of Toronto residents can now obtain a temporary on-street parking permit for their guests for either a 24-hour or a 48-hour time period.

Permits, which are required for vehicles to be parked on streets designed for permit parking, can be obtained on-line.  The cost for a 24-hour permit is

Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care has started construction on Emiliy's House, Toronto's first children's pediatric hospice.  A recent donation from The Rotary Club of Toronto and a capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has put the centre closer than ever to their goal of fully renovating and expanding the Governor's House at Broadview and Gerrard.

Many residents have called and emailed my office concerned with recent acts of violence in and around Withrow Park.  I have asked Superintendent Fernandes of 55 Division to increase patrols and several arrests have already been made.

The next step is a community safety walk/meeting with the police, parks staff and residents.

LRV Community Meeting

Like many of you, I support the new streetcars and renewal of transit for the downtown but I do not support the Leslie Street route. At the TTC meeting on February 2nd I reiterated my opposition to Leslie Street being used as the connecting route. The Commission agreed to re-evaluate the Knox – Eastern Avenue route and report back in June.  The report is now coming to the July 6th TTC meeting taking place at 1:00 p.m., Second Floor, City Hall.

The TTC has sent out the following notice describing a temporary service change on Queen Street East, from Thursday June 30 to Tuesday July 5, 2011, between Greenwood and Broadview Avenue.

June 30 to July 5, 2011 501/301 QUEEN ROUTE During the period from 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 30 to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, the TTC will be carrying out repairs to the streetcar tracks on Queen Street East just east of Greenwood Avenue. Note: In the event of inclement weather, the timeline for the work and bus looping is subject to change.

Canada Day Celebration in Riverdale Park East

Neighbours Together on Canada Day will host its 18th Canada Day celebration on July 1st in Toronto’s Riverdale Park, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.  The celebration is organized by my office, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce (East Toronto) in conjunction with elected representatives, Peter Tabuns and Jack Layton.  businesses, and local community partners including Bridgepoint Health neighbouring the park.

Thank you for attending the Fairford Coxwell Community meeting last week. John McGill, a traffic engineer specializing in pedestrian issues has received all of your feedback and will be considering it in the weeks to come.  I will continue to update the community on the progress of this intersection study.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the planning and design of our new park for Rivertowne.  After many months of community consultation construction is about to begin.  The park will offer many exciting features including community gardens, a water play area, a new playground and significant tree plantings.  To learn more about the new park, please view the presentation from our June 21st community meeting.

In April, a number of residents attended an informal meeting with Urbancorp, the developer who had purchased St. Joseph's school. Urbancorp’s application has now been officially submitted to City Planning and the next step is a community planning meeting which will be held on Monday, June 27 th.
