Nominations now open for the Green Toronto Awards

The City of Toronto, in partnership with Green Living Enterprises, invites you to nominate the individuals, companies and organizations leading the way to a cleaner, greener Toronto.   Winners will receive a prestigious Green Toronto Award and $5,000 to further their work on the environment or donate to an environmental charity of their choice.

Hydro Overhead Construction –Project Pape

Toronto Hydro will be doing overhead construction in Ward 30 this year.  They plan to rebuild the overhead electrical systems to improve service reliability and reduce the frequency of outages.  Expected work includes the replacements of existing poles and transformers.   The construction is scheduled to commence in early January and completion is expected by October 2011.   The

City of Toronto offices will be closed on Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28, and also on Monday, January 3, 2011. All City emergency services and 24-hour operations will be provided during the holiday season.

Residents can call 311, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for more information about City services.

Holiday collection and Christmas tree pickup

Toronto residents receiving Friday collection will continue to receive regularly scheduled garbage, recycling and organics collection during the holidays (this applies to collection on both Friday, December 24 and December 31).

Residents receiving curbside collection are reminded that they may set out any unwanted electronics (E-waste) at the curb on scheduled garbage collection

BOLD tree plan taking root

A grassroots initiative designed to strengthen the local tree canopy has done much more than give Ward 30 residents information about how to get a free tree planted in their front yard.

The Leslieville/Riverdale Tree Project, a partnership between local tree advocacy group Beautification of Leslieville District (BOLD) and Neighbourhood Action on Air Quality (NAAQ), an outdoor air quality initiative funded by the Toronto Atmospheric Fund and run through the South Riverdale Community Health Center (SRCHC), has resulted in neighbours branching out to one another.

Toronto’s annual Christmas Choral Concert

The City of Toronto invites the public to celebrate the season this Thursday, December 23 with the annual Christmas Choral Celebration. Residents can join in the singing or simply enjoy the vocal stylings of the All the King's Voices, Toronto Beaches Children's Chorus and the Toronto Mass Choir. Musical accompaniment is provided by the Tower Brass.

The concert will last approximately one hour and will conclude with a visit

Clearing The Air on the TTC

"Clearing The Air on the TTC", a new report published by the Toronto Environmental Alliance reveals that Light Rail Transit (LRT) offers the best hope for combatting climate change in Toronto.

The report notes that –per dollar spent- LRT systems emit less than half the greenhouse gases of subways. And because LRT systems are cheaper and faster to build, more can be built, reaching more people and therefore getting more cars
