Parks

Our community features some of Toronto’s best parks, which are both centre-points for our local residents and destinations for those visiting our neighbourhoods. But our challenge remains improving park facilities as they age while finding new and exciting ways to enhance our use of parks.

Working with local residents and organizations, I’ve championed the inclusion of community gardens within our parks as not only a way of growing fresh local food and building awareness of food security, but as a vital way to enrich our community

I also continue to work closely with local ‘Friends Of’ groups to animate our parks, and find creative ways to improve and better use our park facilities. Parks are such an important part of our lives, and investing in their upkeep and maintenance is essential for our community.

City of Toronto to expedite opening of community gardens and allotment gardens

To help gardeners get a head start on spring preparation work, the City of Toronto will be opening its community and allotment gardens six weeks earlier this year. The City's 81 community gardens and 12 allotment gardens provide Torontonians with a source of fresh produce and another option for essential fresh air and exercise.

Today, Mayor John Tory announced that community gardens will begin opening this week, on a location by location basis, until mid-May. Allotment gardens will open on March 17. Community and allotment gardens are permitted to open in the Grey Zone of the Province of Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework. The gardens typically open in early May.

As part of its Welcome T.O. Winter parks plan this season, the City of Toronto worked closely with community groups to facilitate 46 natural ice rinks in parks across the city. Every winter, residents build and maintain natural rinks on parkland, providing a family-friendly and safe recreation activity in parks across Toronto.

City of Toronto to more than double its supply of winter park washrooms

The City of Toronto will more than double its supply of winter park washrooms from 64 to 143 as part of its ongoing response to COVID-19.

City staff are presenting a plan and report to November City Council that will add 79 new winter washrooms across the city on top of the 64 locations typically available. The report comes in response to a request by City Council last month to explore expanding the number of public washrooms available throughout the winter.
