Parks

Our community features some of Toronto’s best parks, which are both centre-points for our local residents and destinations for those visiting our neighbourhoods. But our challenge remains improving park facilities as they age while finding new and exciting ways to enhance our use of parks.

Working with local residents and organizations, I’ve championed the inclusion of community gardens within our parks as not only a way of growing fresh local food and building awareness of food security, but as a vital way to enrich our community

I also continue to work closely with local ‘Friends Of’ groups to animate our parks, and find creative ways to improve and better use our park facilities. Parks are such an important part of our lives, and investing in their upkeep and maintenance is essential for our community.

Hubbard Park Opening

Hubbard Park honours William Peyton Hubbard who was was elected as a City Alderman becoming Toronto’s first Black elected politician in 1894. He later went on to serve as Acting Mayor. An exceptional advocate for fairness and for an inclusive city, William Hubbard led the efforts to establish our public utility provider, Toronto Hydro.

Labour Day Weekend with the City of Toronto

Recreation activities available at City of Toronto attractions across the city during Labour Day long weekend

The City of Toronto will offer a wide variety of activities for residents over the Labour Day long weekend, with many family attractions open.

On Labour Day – Monday, September 5, City recreation centres will be closed and their recreation programs will not operate.

Monarch Park Pool to Re-open July 9!

UPDATE: Thanks to the hard work of City staff, Monarch Park Pool will be open again as of July 9th!

I have been advised by City staff that the outdoor pool and wading pool at Monarch Park are closed due to significant damage to the pipes and boiler. The City is anticipating that repairs will take a week, and the Monarch Park Pool website will be updated when there is a firm date for reopening.

Carlaw + Dundas in Leslieville

The Carlaw + Dundas district of our Leslieville neighbourhood has a rich industrial heritage dating back to the late 1800s. Early industries – including abattoirs, cattle sheds, piggeries, market gardens, brickyards, florists and a tree nursery – emerged to take advantage of the easy access to the growing city and Carlaw + Dundas' proximity to the Grand Trunk Railway.

Withrow Park Safety Walk

At November’s safety walk we decided to do a follow up safety walk with residents, officers from Division 55 and City staff after the new lights had been installed and the trees were in leaf.

Please join me this Tuesday July 5^th for a safety walk in Withrow Park. We'll meet at 7pm at the Withrow Park Clubhouse.

Two Great Opportunities To Get Involved With Our Urban Tree Canopy

Adopt-a-Park-Tree

LEAF is seeking applications from community groups that would like support from LEAF and our Young Urban Forest Leaders to develop an Adopt-a-Park-Tree program in a city park. Parks with newly planted trees that would benefit from basic care (watering, mulching, monitoring) will be prioritized. The deadline for applications is March 6th.

City of Toronto's holiday activities and recreation options

The City of Toronto invites residents and visitors to take advantage of the City's many activities, programs and attractions available during the holidays.

Fitness, camps and recreation programs

The City offers fitness classes, weight rooms, camps, permitted hobby clubs and more, offering something for everyone.

Holiday hours:

December 24 and 31: Community recreation centres will close at 4 p.m., except those with scheduled permits.

Photography contest focuses on the wonders of winter in Toronto

The City of Toronto's Parks, Forestry and Recreation division is holding a Snap & Share photo contest, presented by Nikon Canada, to highlight the wonders of winter in Toronto's parks, ravines and recreation spaces.

From today until February 19, the public is invited to snap and share photos in six categories for a chance to win great prizes. Contest categories include: Colour in Winter, Family Fun, Walking in a Winter Wonderland, the Great Indoors, Winter Wildlife, and Toronto Walking Tour. The last category will be exclusive to participants of a photography walking tour, which will take place in High Park on February 6 and be led by Nikon Canada Ambassador and professional photographer Kristian Bogner. The contest will also include a People's Choice component.

Riverdale Park Playground Enhancements

Thanks to the feedback we received from the community in July 2015, we are pleased to announce that the playground design has been finalized.

We received lots of great comments and suggestions in support of many of the proposed features and as a result established features that are the most important to the community. Popular features of the design included the slide, amphitheatre seating,climbing rocks, climbing structure, and water play. Overall, there was great support for the use of natural materials (i.e. rocks, logs, water) in the playground design.
