The Carlaw + Dundas district of our Leslieville neighbourhood has a rich industrial heritage dating back to the late 1800s. Early industries – including abattoirs, cattle sheds, piggeries, market gardens, brickyards, florists and a tree nursery – emerged to take advantage of the easy access to the growing city and Carlaw + Dundas' proximity to the Grand Trunk Railway.

At November’s safety walk we decided to do a follow up safety walk with residents, officers from Division 55 and City staff after the new lights had been installed and the trees were in leaf.

Please join me this Tuesday July 5th for a safety walk in Withrow Park.  We'll meet at 7pm at the Withrow Park Clubhouse.

If you have safety concerns and you're not able to join me at the walk, please get in touch with my office at [email protected] and Crime Prevention Constable Jonathan Morrice, 416-808-5579 or Jonathan.Morrice@torontopolice.on.ca

I'm pleased to let you know that at the June City Council meeting Council agreed to study a Danforth Bike Lane! I'll keep you updated as this issue progresses. Earlier this year I wrote PWIC Chair Councillor Jaye Robinson to express support for a Danforth Bike Lane Study. This is a first step in moving towards a bike lane on the Danforth. Along with cyclists and business owners, I was proud to

The City of Toronto is asking residents to be part of the important decisions that are being made to improve Toronto's rapid transit network, including current plans for SmartTrack, Scarborough Transit, the Relief Line and Waterfront Transit Reset.

"Toronto residents have been clear – we need to get this city moving. SmartTrack will cut congestion on the Yonge line by providing all-day, two-way, express service across the city. The Scarborough transit plan will bring more transit for more people in Scarborough,” said Mayor John Tory. "We need to build transit to connect people to jobs and jobs to people and bring opportunity to all four corners of the city so our residents and businesses are able to prosper. I hope people will share their ideas, opinions and experiences with us as we work toward decisions on transit."

Background

The City of Toronto is planning public realm improvements in the Carlaw + Dundas community. The triangle at Carlaw + Dundas will be transformed into an iconic, urban gathering space as a part of the public realm improvements.

The City of Toronto has reached a tentative agreement with CUPE Local 79, which represents the City's 21,000 active inside workers.

Details of the agreement will be released once it is ratified by the Local 79 membership and subsequently approved by City Council. A new agreement with the City's 4,200 active outside workers, represented by Toronto Civic Employees' Union Local 416 (CUPE), was approved by City Council on February 29.

Adopt-a-Park-Tree

LEAF is seeking applications from community groups that would like support from LEAF and our Young Urban Forest Leaders to develop an Adopt-a-Park-Tree program in a city park.  Parks with newly planted trees that would benefit from basic care (watering, mulching, monitoring) will be prioritized. The deadline for applications is March 6th.

The City of Toronto has launched MyWaterToronto, an online tool that enables customers to view their water use information from their computer or mobile device. Customers can access the tool at http://www.toronto.ca/mywatertoronto.

“This is an important tool for the City and a big step forward in providing better customer service for our residents,” said Councillor Jaye Robinson (Ward 25 Don Valley West), Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. “MyWaterToronto will help customers better understand their water use, identify potential leaks and look at ways to save water and money.”

As you may be aware, the City is in the midst of contract negotiations with Locals 416 and 79, who represent the City's inside and outside workers. While I hope that a fair agreement is reached with both locals, there is the possibility of either a lock-out or strike action beginning Friday, February 19.

The City has a contingency plan in place and I will be updating my website at www.councillorpaulafletcher.ca with any new information as it becomes available. My staff and I will work off-site in the event of a labour disruption and will be checking voicemails and emails regularly.
