Give your Halloween Jack-O-Lantern another opportunity to shine and join a neighbourhood pumpkin parade on November 1st.  This year, I'm happy to be working with the Friends of Withrow Park, the Friends of Felstead Park, the Friends of Leslie Grove Park and the Pocket Community Association to hold four pumpkin parades in Ward 30.  You can find more about each parade on my events listing page here.

Hubbard Park honours William Peyton Hubbard who was was elected as a City Alderman becoming Toronto’s first Black elected politician in 1894. He later went on to serve as Acting Mayor.  An exceptional advocate for fairness and for an inclusive city, William Hubbard led the efforts to establish our public utility provider, Toronto Hydro.

Council Highlights

Toronto City Council meeting of October 5, 6 and 7, 2016

Work plan for rail deck park

Council approved funding to study the feasibility of a "rail deck" park involving a major park space above the rail corridor between Bathurst Street and Blue Jays Way in Toronto. Staff were asked to report back next year on an implementation strategy that addresses matters such as options for securing air rights above the rail corridor and for project funding with an emphasis on growth-related revenue sources.

This weekend starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, TTC overhead crews will be upgrading the overhead infrastructure on Gerrard Street. The overhead wiring upgrade is necessary for the future operation of the TTC’s new accessible streetcars. Over the past two years, electrical crews have been upgrading the overhead wire system along streetcar routes in the city. To complete this overhead work as safely and with minimal impact to traffic as possible, TTC staff will work each night between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Thanks to everyone who joined me at the official opening of Bridgepoint Drive! It was great to open this new road and to celebrate the completion of Bridgepoint Active Healthcare's beautiful campus.  I was especially honoured to be able to join the incredible Marian Walsh on her last day at Bridgepoint, and to meet the new CEO of Sinai Health, Gary Newton.

Update: The new signature marker stands up to media criticism! Take a look at some of the articles that have been written about the our signature marker in Urban Toronto, the Toronto Sun, and the Beach Mirror.

I am proud to announce that we have a winner for the Carlaw + Dundas Signature Marker Design!  Internationally acclaimed Toronto artist and designer Pierre Poussin's obelisk marker will become an iconic feature of the neighbourhood and will help raise the bar on public space design.

In many communities, volunteers come together to create natural ice rinks on parkland. About 30 to 40 natural ice rinks are typically built each year, with another record-breaking 55+ sites listed for 2016. These community-run rinks offer a great back-to-nature skating experience. Availability and ice conditions can vary throughout the winter based on weather and volunteer maintenance. These rinks are available to the general public at their own risk. We encourage all skaters to wear a helmet for their personal safety.
