Overdose deaths in Toronto have gone up by 73 per cent over the past decade

By Lauren Pelley, CBC News Apr 09, 2017 8:06 AM ET

Six suspected overdoses. Two nightclubs. One 24-year-old woman dead.

A deadly weekend night in Toronto's club scene led police to urge public caution — and now, city councillors are calling for more action to protect clubgoers amid rising overdose deaths throughout the city.

Police say five overdoses early Saturday — including one that killed a 24-year-old woman — involved the party drug MDMA. It is not yet known whether the woman also ingested fentanyl or another substance.

Five overdoses near Toronto nightclubs early Saturday, including one that killed a 24-year-old woman, triggered a health warning and calls for clubs and authorities to take new steps to save lives.

This April, nearly 1,000 refugees will spend the night at a Toronto shelter.

With that number steadily climbing and housing getting more and more expensive, city councillors are hoping to build more shelter spaces across the city.

Coun. Paula Fletcher (Ward 30, Toronto-Danforth) admits that with shelters at 97 per cent capacity — far higher than council's committed target of 90 per cent — the pressure is on.

Take action
