Mayor John Tory wants to put the downtown relief line on the fast track, moving up $162 million in funding to accelerate construction by at least two years.

Factoring in the cost of congestion on the roads and on the transit system, this investment in an expedited relief line makes economic sense, Tory said Thursday.

The City of Toronto encourages residents and visitors to explore City programs and attractions offered during the holiday season. From outdoor winter recreational activities such as tobogganing and skating, to savouring seasonal hot cider and cookies at Toronto's historic sites, there is always something new to discover in Toronto.

Most City of Toronto operations and all municipal offices will be closed on December 25 and 26, as well as January 1. City services that regularly operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week such as 311 Toronto and emergency services will be available. Information about the TTC and curbside waste collection is provided later in this news release.

'Tis the season...for the annual Toy & Food Drive!

If you'd like to help make the holidays brighter for a child or family in our community, the City's annual Holiday Toy & Food Drive is underway. You can donate new, unwrapped toys and/or non-perishable food items until noon on Friday, December 21 at City Hall, Metro Hall and all civic centres. Toys will be donated to the Toronto Fire Fighters Toy Drive and non-perishable food items to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Residents and visitors are invited to join Mayor John Tory and councillors at the 53rd annual City Hall Christmas Concert in the rotunda of Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. W. The free concert will begin at noon on Thursday, December 20.

This public concert has taken place every year since City Hall opened in 1965. As in past years, this year's event will feature top Toronto vocalists and instrumentalists.

 The transformation of east end Toronto’s waterfront began on a cold, windy Wednesday morning in the Port Lands.

On October 17, 2018, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks signed a Notice to Proceed for the Relief Line South in accordance with the Environmental Project Report. We are pleased to advise that the City of Toronto and Metrolinx have now issued the Statement of Completion of the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP). The completion of the TPAP allows the project to proceed to construction.

The City of Toronto is inviting residents and industry members to share their views on vehicle-for-hire regulations at a series of public meetings that start on September 17.

The bylaw for the licensing of vehicles-for-hire (Chapter 546) regulates taxicabs, limousines and private transportation companies (PTCs) such as Uber and Lyft and their drivers. The bylaw came into effect in July 2016.

Justice Belobaba struck down Ford's legislation (Bill 5) that would have cut Toronto from 47 wards to 25 wards. This is a huge win for local democracy! Thank you to everyone who came to a meeting or rally, signed a petition, sent an email or made a phone call.
