Mayor John Tory has proclaimed February as Black History Month in the City of Toronto. Many programs and events will be held at historic sites, community centres, libraries and other public spaces throughout the month including exhibits, educational presentations, food tastings and performances.
Free programming and events for adults and children will take place at community recreation centres, including art and poster displays, movie nights, Black history presentations and more. What is happening this month
Left: Excavators are at work on the first section of the new river valley, digging up to 1 metre to establish the shape of the valley. In addition to excavators, expect to see front end loaders and rock trucks moving and storing soil. Right: Throughout the month of February, there will be partial lane closures on Commissioners Street while we conduct surveys and geotechnical investigations – at no point will the street be fully closed. The drill crews will also be working on the grassy area alongside Don Roadway between Villiers and Commissioners Streets. This work will not impact traffic along Don Roadway.

Residents celebrating Chinese New Year this month can look forward to a variety of events in the area.
This year will be known as the Year of the Pig, where the pig is known as the 12th and last of the Chinese zodiac signs. Each zodiac sign is assigned a specific animal according to their birth year. Those assigned to the Year of the Pig are known to be realists who thoroughly enjoy life, according to Chinese mythology.
The City of Toronto's Budget Committee will hear public presentations on the staff-recommended 2019 budget beginning next week. Members of the public can make a deputation at budget sub-committee meetings on February 7 and 11 at four locations across the city.
Torontonians who want to share their views on the budget are asked to register by emailing [email protected] or by calling 416-392-4666, indicating the location, date and time when they want to speak. Individuals may make only one presentation at any one of the consultation sessions.
Toronto City Council has voted to start talks aimed at acquiring the mothballed waterfront Richard L. Hearn Generating Station to preserve it for public use, after provincially owned Ontario Power Generation sold the site to a private developer for $16-million last year.

It was a not-so-happy start to the new year for hundreds of drivers downtown earlier this month, according to Paula Fletcher.
The city councillor for Ward 14, Toronto-Danforth says as many as 600 motorists who left their cars on side streets overnight, rather than attempt to drive home, got parking tickets.
The City of Toronto's Budget Committee today began the process to review the staff-recommended tax-supported and rate-supported operating and capital budgets for 2019. The budgets will be reviewed and debated by Budget and Executive Committees before being finalized and approved by City Council at its meeting on March 7.
The 2019 staff-recommended operating budget of $13.46 billion focuses on finding sustainable savings across City divisions and agencies while maintaining service levels and making modest investments and enhancements in key areas. The budget includes $54.7 million in new investments for key priorities and enhanced services.
