Following this week's announcement from the Government of Canada that the City of Toronto will receive $203.3 million through the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), today City Council approved Mayor John Tory's motion directing staff to take the next steps to plan and implement the work needed to move forward.
The RHI is delivering $1 billion in grant funding nationally to rapidly create new affordable rental housing in response to the urgent housing needs of vulnerable and marginalized individuals. Specifically, the RHI aims to support: women and children fleeing domestic violence, seniors, young adults, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, people dealing with mental health and addiction issues, veterans, LGBTQ2+, racialized groups, Black Canadians, recent immigrants or refugees, and homeless people or those at risk of homelessness.

Today, Mayor John Tory launched MoveTO – a City staff action plan to help manage congestion and build a more resilient, modern and safe transportation system.
The plan, which will be considered at the Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting on Thursday, November 5, proposes five key measures that will help make the City’s transportation system more resilient in response to the effects of COVID-19 on Toronto’s overall transportation network.
Toronto City Council has unanimously approved Mayor John Tory’s key item that will extend its winter patio program to provide more outdoor dining options to support local restaurants this winter and into the spring.
Provincial orders currently prohibit indoor dining in Toronto and restaurants need flexibility to find expanded outdoor dining spaces that are safe and meet important accessibility requirements.

The City of Toronto continues to respond to COVID-19. Today, Mayor John Tory and Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa provided an update on the City’s measures to combat the resurgence of the virus in Toronto.
There are 25,278 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 346 new cases today. There are 128 people hospitalized. In total, 21,256 people have recovered from COVID-19. To date, there have been 1,338 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. The City of Toronto is developing an inclusionary zoning policy that would require new residential developments to include affordable housing units, creating mixed-income housing. Our city is growing and we want to make sure new housing is affordable for those who call Toronto home. Today, Toronto Public Health (TPH) is launching the annual online flu vaccine booking system to help residents schedule their appointments for TPH's annual flu vaccine clinics. This year, in response to local COVID-19 circumstances, TPH flu vaccine clinics will only be available through online appointments to ensure that appropriate physical distancing and infection prevention and control measures can be followed to reduce the potential risk of virus spread and keep residents safer.
Today, Mayor John Tory announced that approximately $1.9 million in additional funding will be distributed from the TO Supports Investment Fund to 33 community-based agencies supporting vulnerable populations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the second installment of the City's commitment of 20 per cent towards the provincial Social Services Relief Fund to support non-profit social service agencies during this pandemic.
