City of Toronto update on COVID-19 - November 16, 2020

The City of Toronto continues to respond to COVID-19. Today, Mayor John Tory, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, and Fire Chief and General Manager of the Office of Emergency Management Matthew Pegg provided an update on the City’s measures to combat the resurgence of the virus in Toronto.

There are 35,130 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 538 new cases today. There are 176 people hospitalized. In total, 29,079 people have recovered from COVID-19. To date, there have been 1,464 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Medical Officer of Health issues Section 22 order to strengthen COVID-19 protections in Toronto

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, has now issued an order under Section 22 of the Province of Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act, as announced on Tuesday, November 10, to strengthen COVID-19 protections in the city.

As of 12:01 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, November 14, the order will come into force as the Province of Ontario places Toronto into the Red – Control category of the provincial COVID-19 response framework. The order extends prohibitions on indoor dining and indoor group fitness classes, and requires casinos, bingo halls, gambling establishments, meeting and event spaces (including banquet halls and conference centres), as well as hookah cafes and lounges to remain closed for a 28-day period.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, STEPS supported GTA 11 Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) to develop 41 art installations in collaboration with 20 local artists. Ranging from sidewalk decals to storefront exhibits, installations fostered a sense of community during local economic recovery.

City of Toronto mandating stricter restrictions to decrease COVID-19 transmission in Toronto

Today, the Medical Officer of Health announced a number of public health measures to be introduced when the City of Toronto is moved by the Province of Ontario into the provincial COVID-19 response framework on November 14.

Dr. de Villa's recommendations come as the city sees its COVID-19 numbers going in the wrong direction. Beyond her recommendation that Toronto be moved into the Red – Control category in the provincial framework, Dr. de Villa introduced a number of directives to help reduce the spread of the virus in our community.

City of Toronto launches COVID-19 Immunization Task Force to prepare for arrival of COVID-19 vaccine

COVID-19 continues to circulate in our community. There are 31,908 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 504 new cases today. There are 161 people hospitalized. In total, 26,814 people have recovered from COVID-19. To date, there have been 1,411 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

The City of Toronto has formed a COVID-19 Immunization Task Force as part of its pandemic response and recovery efforts.

City of Toronto launches 2021 rate-supported budgets

The 2021 staff-recommended rate-supported operating and capital budgets were launched at Budget Committee today. The City of Toronto has three rate-supported programs funded through user fees: Toronto Water, Solid Waste Management Services and the Toronto Parking Authority.

The City of Toronto, consistent with other large Canadian municipalities, has experienced significant financial impacts in the form of both added costs and revenue losses as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. These unprecedented impacts are expected to continue into 2021, with anticipated financial pressures of approximately $1.8 billion.
