Danielle Young is eight-and-a-half months pregnant, but during the six-day blackout at her house, that was the least of her worries.

Standing on their doorstep with the door wide open because the temperature was about the same inside as out, Danielle Young and her two kids let out a big cheer.

Griffin, 4, stuck a big thumbs-up out to the Toronto Hydro crew working on the lines across the street, but it was 2-year-old Hazel who summed it up best: “The power’s back on!”

When?

The City of Toronto will begin cleaning up the thousands of downed tree limbs that fell as a result of the ice storm on January 3. The cleanup operation, which is expected to take approximately eight weeks, will begin simultaneously in wards across the city. Residents may monitor the debris removal progress by checking a detailed map on the City’s web site at http://www.toronto.ca.

The City announced its plan today for cleaning up the thousands of downed tree limbs that fell as a result of the ice storm on Dec. 21 and 22. While City forestry crews continue to tend to overhead branches that are a safety hazard, Solid Waste Management will lead the collection and chipping of wood debris piled on city streets.

Toronto Hydro reports there are approximately 290 customers without service, and crews will continue to work throughout the night until all outages are addressed. In addition, there are approximately 490 locations that have received Electrical Safety Authority approval to re-energize following repairs to electrical stand pipes that were damaged in the storm.  Toronto Hydro is dispatching crews to these locations.

Toronto Hydro has finished repairs to primary feeders, restoring power to approximately 227,800 customers (down from 300,000 at the height of the storm).

Power Restoration Continues – Additional crews from other utilities being deployed, focused on most severely impacted areas.

Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) has approximately 33,000 customers without power; 82 per cent have been restored since the height of the storm on December 22.

The company continues to work around the clock to get power back on as quickly and safely as possible. Additional aid has arrived from Hydro One and Horizon Utilities and these crews have been deployed to severely impacted areas.
