The City of Toronto has proclaimed February as Black History Month, a celebration of the history, heritage and contributions of African-Canadians in Toronto. Many private events happening across Toronto, and City divisions and agencies have programming throughout the month.

The City of Toronto's Market Gallery is presenting an exhibition on the Ontario Black History Society from February 1 through April 19. For 35 years, the society has expanded the public's awareness and appreciation of black history, and was the organization that first requested a proclamation of Black History Month in 1979. A framed copy of the proclamation will be presented to the Ontario Black History Society at the exhibition launch at 5:30 p.m. on January 31.

Join Councillor Fletcher and the East Toronto Chinese Chamber for a Public Presentation of the East Chinatown Revitalization Study

Ryerson Planning Students undertook a study of East Chinatown to look at enhancements to the social vibrancy, economic vitality, and public realm. Come see the presentation and take part in informal conversation afterwards. All are welcome.

The City of Toronto is holding a series of public consultation sessions from February 3 to 12 to gather public input on proposed changes to regulations for electronic and illuminated signs and billboards.

In 2013, the City of Toronto initiated a comprehensive research project that included a planning and design review, an update of traffic safety implications and a poll to assess public opinion in Toronto on electronic and illuminated signs.

Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto are jointly carrying out the Gardiner Expressway / Lake Shore Boulevard Reconfiguration Environmental Assessment (EA) and Integrated Urban Design Study. The EA will determine the future of the Gardiner Expressway East and Lake Shore Boulevard East, from approximately Jarvis Street to approximately Leslie Street. The study area for the EA is displayed on the map below.

The City of Toronto together with the Toronto Police Service have launched a series of new initiatives to improve traffic flow and compliance with the City's parking regulations. The initiatives include:

  • increased fines for unlawful stopping, standing, and parking on rush-hour routes
  • implementation of a fixed fine system for parking offences
  • increased ticketing for expired licence plate validation stickers, and

The City of Toronto strongly supports resolutions put forward by the GTA mayors and regional chairs today requesting that the Province of Ontario and Government of Canada each fund one-third of the full cost of response and recovery for affected municipalities from the recent ice storm.

"On behalf of the City of Toronto, I am calling on the Premier of Ontario and the Prime Minister to support Toronto and our neighbours in other GTA municipalities as we struggle to foot the bill for this very damaging and costly storm," said Mayor Rob Ford. "Toronto was hit hard by two extreme storms last year that cost the City $171 million. Toronto residents cannot shoulder this huge burden on their own."

As part of TTC’s commitment to accessibility, Woodbine Station will be upgraded to be fully accessible for all customers. A new second exit will also be built from the subway platform to enhance safety and convenience.

Work will include:

  • New elevators
  • Improved signage and wayfinding

The City of Toronto is hosting a public meeting on the request to permit jet airplanes at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA). The focus of the meeting will be to provide an update on the status of the review of this request, and to hear from members of the public.
