My Motion Calling on the Province to Require Affordable Housing for the Gerrard-Carlaw North Transit Oriented Community Passes

City Council adopted my motion to require the province and their private partner ChoiceREIT to include a minimum of 20 percent affordable housing at the Gerrard-Carlaw TOC site.

A 'Transit-Oriented Community' (TOC) is a special arrangement between Infrastructure Ontario and a private developer to allow for significant increases in density at stations along the Ontario Line.

A TOC is being planned for the future Gerrard Station on the Ontario Line at Riverdale Plaza. Since it was announced, I have pressed Infrastructure Ontario and the developer ChoiceREIT to add affordable housing into their plan. I am very disappointed that no commitment to include affordable housing has been made.

In response, I submitted two motions that were considered first at last month's Toronto and East York Community Council and then at City Council this week:

  1. City Council request the Provincial Government require a minimum of 20 percent affordable housing on the Provincial Transit Oriented Community site at Gerrard/Carlaw.
  2. City Council request ChoiceREIT and Infrastructure Ontario to make a public commitment to add 20 percent of affordable units for 50 years guaranteed affordability to the their proposed Rezoning at the Provincial Transit Oriented Community site at Gerrard and Carlaw.

I'm pleased to share they were adopted by City Council. You can read the full status report submitted to the Toronto and East York Community Council here.

Thank you to the approximately 1,000 people from across the community who signed this petition that I submitted to City Council this week.
