News Release - Community Safety Still at Stake with Ontario Line Vehicles Using Residential Streets

Councillor Fletcher calls on Metrolinx to stop endangering East Yorkers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORONTO – Councillor Paula Fletcher issued the following statement in response to Metrolinx trucks continued use of residential streets.

“Once again I am calling on Metrolinx to make community safety a top priority when constructing the Ontario Line and stop their large trucks from using residential streets like Sammon and Mortimer,” said Fletcher.

A video taken on Thursday shows a large Ontario Line construction truck making a right hand turn onto Mortimer from Pape. This is the same intersection where a Metrolinx dump truck making the same right hand turn struck a Pedestrian. The truck which hit the pedestrian was not following the approved haul route.

“Given the individual who took the video was only standing at the intersection for a few minutes while waiting for a bus, coupled with additional reports from residents to my office. I think it’s safe to say this was not an isolated incident” added Fletcher.

Additionally, photos from Tuesday show Sammon being used by a large vehicle for the delivery of construction materials to Metrolinx’s Pape and Sammon construction site.

“I am calling on Metrolinx to ensure its vehicles use the safest routes through the community for the duration of Ontario Line construction,” said Fletcher.

On Thursday Councillor Fletcher, MPP Peter Tabuns and Trustee Sara Erhardt are co-hosting an online community safety meeting about Ontario Line construction. Metrolinx has been invited. Register to attend here.
