The data is clear: speed cameras save lives.
That's why I'm deeply concerned about the province's plan to remove speed cameras.
They reduce speeding, prevent accidents and help keep communities safe. And because many speed cameras are in school zones, they protect kids on their way to school.

Speed Camera Facts
The city's Automated Speed Enforcement program, or speed cameras, are a proven tool for protecting kids and other vulnerable road users against speeding.
Serious injuries and fatalities on Toronto's roads have gone down from 448 in 2018 when speed cameras were first introduced to 308 in 2024.
SickKids-TMU Study
SickKids Hospital and Toronto Metropolitan University researchers discussed their study on speed cameras at the Safe School Summit Deputy Mayor Colle and I co-hosted.
Their findings were revealing: speed cameras reduced speeding in school zones by 45 percent.

Vision Zero Road Safety Improvements
The city has made a significant commitment to improve road safety for children and other vulnerable pedestrians.
In addition to speed cameras, Toronto has invested $33 million in the school crossing guard program and $99.1 million on road safety improvements this year alone, resulting in:
- 50 new locations for school crossing guards
- 80 School Safety Zones
- 30 new signalized crosswalks and another 63 new crosswalk markings
- 753 new speed humps
