A Red Letter Day For Housing

After so many years of hard work and preserverance, we celebrated a major accomplishment today: formally transferring ownership of 760 Toronto Community Housing Company (TCHC) homes to two affordable housing non-profit organizations.

The homes are scattered through the city, many of them in Ward 14 (Toronto-Danforth), and going forward they will be operated by two non-profits: Neighbourhood Land Trust and Circle Community Land Trust. The City of Toronto is investing in improving and maintaining the homes’ state of good repair, supported by the federal government.

The transfer comes after Toronto Council heeded the call of the community and directed the transfer of these homes as the first phase of Toronto’s Tenants First plan.

I can’t overstate how important this good news is for larger families in need of affordable places to live in Toronto. It shows how compassionate, inclusive and welcoming our community is, and it makes me very proud.
