Council unanimously approves creating 971 new affordable rental homes through the City's Open Door Program

Today, Toronto City Council unanimously approved creating 971 new affordable rental homes in 15 developments through the Open Door Program.

With today's endorsement by Council, a total of 11,143 affordable rental homes have now been approved through the City of Toronto's Open Door Program (ODP). This program is designed to accelerate affordable housing construction by providing a range of incentives from the City, which could include an exemption of fees, charges or property tax; capital funding; the fast-tracking of planning approvals; and activating surplus public land. Approved projects must begin construction within three years of the date of approval in order to maintain access to the capital grant and/or incentives. 

City of Toronto commemorates one year in the ongoing fight against COVID-19

Since March 2020, the City of Toronto’s Emergency Operations Centre has been activated in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Over the next few weeks, the City will mark a number of COVID-19 milestone dates that are significant to Torontonians and remind us of the importance of our continued efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19.

These dates offer an opportunity for Toronto to mourn the lives lost as a result of the virus,  reflect on the past year, support those who have lost loved ones, recognize the contributions of frontline and essential workers, acknowledge all the sacrifices made, and lift those who continue to struggle with long-term health impacts as a result of the virus.

TORONTO HOSPITALS AND ONTARIO HEALTH TEAMS LAUNCH COVID-19 VACCINE CALL CENTRE AND WEBSITE

(March 8, 2021) Toronto, ON – Toronto hospitals and their partner Ontario Health Teams (OHTs) joined forces today to launch a centralized COVID-19 call centre and website to support eligible adults in Toronto to pre-register or book their vaccination appointments. The Toronto COVID-19 Vaccine Call Centre and Website (www.vaccineto.ca) will be one central place to support priority populations identified as part of Phase I in the Ontario Vaccine Distribution Plan.

City of Toronto to receive enough COVID-19 vaccine to open three of its mass immunization clinics starting March 17

Toronto Mayor John Tory today announced that three of the City of Toronto’s mass immunization clinics will open early to vaccinate residents who are over the age of 80 starting on March 17.

The three City-run clinics to open on March 17 are:

• Metro Toronto Convention Centre
• Scarborough Town Centre
• Toronto Congress Centre.

These clinics will operate seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Details on clinic operations, including how to book, will be available in the coming days. The City is working with the Province of Ontario to implement a booking system.

Toronto COVID-19 vaccination update - March 8, 2021

The City of Toronto is working with all our healthcare partners and Toronto Public Health to administer all available COVID-19 vaccines.

To date, 203,771 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in Toronto.

Today, a number of Toronto hospitals and community healthcare centres are vaccinating priority groups identified by the Province of Ontario’s priority framework for COVID-19 vaccination including residents aged 80 years and over. These clinics are only vaccinating those in the priority groups who have confirmed appointments.

City of Toronto supports moving Toronto into Grey Zone of provincial COVID-19 response framework

The City of Toronto continues to respond to COVID-19. Today, the Province of Ontario announced Toronto will be moving into the Grey Zone of the Lockdown Regulation under Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework at of 12:01 a.m. on Monday, March 8. A move to the Grey Zone will better align Toronto restrictions with surrounding regions and help Toronto’s economy as retail businesses are permitted to open for limited in-person shopping.

New locations for City of Toronto’s Automated Speed Enforcement devices in May

The City of Toronto’s 50 Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) devices will begin rotating to the third round of locations in May to reduce speeding at more areas with safety concerns, encourage a wide-ranging deterrent effect and raise public awareness about the need to slow down and obey posted speed limits.

As per provincial guidelines, warning signs have been installed at all new locations to warn drivers in advance. Warning letters will not be issued in lieu of tickets.

As part of its Welcome T.O. Winter parks plan this season, the City of Toronto worked closely with community groups to facilitate 46 natural ice rinks in parks across the city. Every winter, residents build and maintain natural rinks on parkland, providing a family-friendly and safe recreation activity in parks across Toronto.

City of Toronto health sector partners making progress vaccinating Toronto residents 80 years of age and over

The City of Toronto and Toronto Public Health are working with the Province of Ontario and health sector and community partners to vaccinate people across Toronto as quickly as possible to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The Government of Canada is responsible for obtaining the supply of COVID-19 vaccines; the Province has responsibility for distributing the vaccines and identifying priority groups established under the Province’s framework; and Toronto is responsible for supporting the administration of the vaccine in accordance with provincial prioritization and scheduling frameworks as vaccines are provided by the Province.

Medical Officer of Health implements Section 22 Class Order for workplaces as Province considers moving Toronto into Grey Zone of provincial COVID-19 response framework

The City of Toronto continues to respond to COVID-19. Today, Mayor John Tory, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Fire Chief and General Manager of the Office of Emergency Management Matthew Pegg provided an update on the City’s measures to combat the resurgence of the virus in Toronto. Mayor Tory and Dr. de Villa explained the City is requesting to move to the Grey Zone next week.
