Save the Unilever Plant and Preserve Our Industrial Heritage

Preserving our heritage plays an important role in the life of our cities. That's why I moved a motion at City Council to evaluate the Unilever soap factory building for heritage designation.

My motion to evaluate the Unilever soap factory building for heritage designation passed yesterday.

Cadillac Fairview has issued an updated proposal for the East Harbour site, which is now under a Ministerial Zoning Order. Unlike the previously approved plan, this one demolishes the massive soap factory building, Lever Plant No.2, effectively erasing the site's industrial heritage.

The soap factory has been a Toronto landmark since the 1890s and presents a fantastic opportunity for adaptive reuse. Repurposing heritage buildings adds a richness to the built environment and offers character and historical reference that cannot be replicated.

Preserving our heritage and sustainable development play an important role in the life of our cities. There are many good reasons the soap factory should be maintained and preserved as a
celebrated part of our history.

I encourage everyone to please sign the Save Lever Brothers Plant No. 2 petition to send a message asking First Gulf and the province to preserve our community's industrial heritage.
