This week at Council: maximum heat bylaw to protect tenants from extreme heat, new funding deal to build more housing and provincial upload of the Gardiner & DVP.
This week was the June meeting of City Council.
We received an update on the negotiations with the province regarding the upload of the Gardner and the DVP. Stemming from Mayor Chow's New Deal with the province in 2023, uploading these two highways will save the city billions in infrastructure costs over the years ahead.
We adopted a landmark funding deal with the province and federal government to help generate more housing.
The city will receive $1.5 billion in funding to, in turn, reduce development charges to help induce new housing projects while still allowing the city to pay for new infrastructure normally funded through development charges.
City Council also voted in favour of adopting a maximum indoor temperature bylaw, which will make landlords responsible for keeping their units cool enough to protect renters’ health and well-being. This new bylaw will come into effect next summer.
