With Ontario’s economy gradually reopening, the City of Toronto is taking unprecedented steps to invest in the small business recovery on the Danforth through the ActiveTO program. This summer, the City is proposing to spend approximately $4 million to create more public space and patios, make a more beautiful street, and pilot active transportation infrastructure on the Danforth from Broadview Avenue to Dawes Road.

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, today Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Mayor John Tory strongly recommended that the public wear a face mask or face covering to protect others when in settings where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

City of Toronto expands ActiveTO major road closures this weekend
Mayor John Tory announced today that the City of Toronto will expand its ActiveTO major road closures footprint this weekend to provide residents with more space to physically distance while outdoors and getting exercise, while helping stop the spread of COVID-19. Vehicle access on parts of more major roads will be closed for walking, running and biking this Saturday and Sunday.

City of Toronto reopening more than 850 park amenities this week
Today, Mayor John Tory announced the City of Toronto will open more than 850 park amenities this week, following the Province of Ontario’s amendments to an order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. The City of Toronto closed all parks amenities in March, based on public health advice and ahead of the provincial order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the city.

City of Toronto dog off-leash areas open today
The City of Toronto has opened its more than 70 dog off-leash areas following the Province of Ontario’s amendments to an order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act that permit the use of dog off-leash areas.
While visiting a park, people must continue to practise physical distancing. Signage is being installed at the off-leash areas to remind dog owners of the importance of physical distancing to help stop the spread of COVID-19 to protect the safety and well-being of all residents. People must always stay two metres (six feet), or the length of three dogs, apart while visiting the City’s parks and dog off-leash areas.

Planned City of Toronto summer camps cancelled due to COVID-19, work underway for CampTO alternative
The City of Toronto is cancelling all planned 2020 summer camps and preparing an alternative program to get children safely back to camp through a new CampTO program. Details of the program are being developed and are dependent on the lifting of current provincial orders and recommendations from Toronto Public Health.

City of Toronto extends cancellation of permits for major festivals and launches recovery program for events
To slow the spread of COVID-19, the City of Toronto is extending the cancellation of City-led and City-permitted major festivals and events with attendance of more than 250 people through July 31, and those with attendance of 25,000 or more through August 31. The resumption or cancellation of professional sporting events is not included in this decision.

Toronto, ON – A new survey of small business tenants and landlords across Toronto shows that the current Canadian Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program is not enough to keep small businesses alive during the COVID-19 pandemic.
503 businesses and 138 landlords took part in the survey which was coordinated by the Broadview-Danforth Business Improvement Area (BIA) and the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA). This is a follow up to the previous survey in April that showed rent relief was desperately needed.
