Mayor Tory announces spring break CampTO programs

Today, Mayor John Tory announced that registration will be opening for spring break CampTO programs on Tuesday, March 23.

The City of Toronto will offer spring break camps from April 12 through to April 16. In February, the provincial government announced March break would be postponed in order to reduce community transmission of COVID-19.

Mayor Tory was joined for the virtual announcement by Deputy Mayor Michael Thompson (Scarborough Centre), Chair of the Economic and Community Development Committee.

CampTO, first offered in the summer of 2020, is a creative camp experience that provides outdoor and physical activities, active and quiet games, arts and crafts and nature-based activities. CampTO is designed for maximum fun and safety for campers six to 12 years of age.

The program meets guidelines designed in consultation with Toronto Public Health and in alignment with provincial health guidelines for day camps. These guidelines include physical distancing, daily health screening, wearing masks, cohorting, and enhanced facility cleaning. Each camp group will stay together for the entire week and will not interact with other camper groups. Caregivers will receive a phone call prior to camp start to review procedures and do a pre-camp health check.

CampTO campers and staff are expected to wear cloth face coverings or masks indoors and outdoors. Campers will be required to bring two to three clean face coverings or masks to camp each day. Approximately 1,600 in-person camp spaces are available at more than 70 locations across the City.

In addition to in-person CampTO programs, there's a new way to play over the spring break with CampTO Virtual. These 45 minute-long live and interactive workshops will be available to campers age four to 12, every day over the course of spring break. The theme is a coast-to-coast trip across Canada, and workshops will include virtual visits to five Canadian cities. Facilitated by camp staff, participants will explore the diverse food, culture and landmarks of Canada through interactive games and creative programming. There are 1,500 spaces available for virtual camp workshops.

Registration for spring break CampTO will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. Programs will be available for viewing beginning March 17 at https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/recreation/campto/.

The quickest and easiest way to register is online at https://efun.toronto.ca/TorontoFun/Start/Start.asp. Phone registration will also be available. Residents can call 416-396-7378 Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends for help preparing for registration.

Although civic centres remain closed to the public to reduce the spread of COVID-19, five community centre locations will be open on March 23 and 24 for in-person registration support. Wi-Fi will be available and staff will be onsite to assist with the registration process. Residents may bring their own devices to in-person registration sites; however, staff will register those without their own devices. Locations and hours are available at https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/recreation/campto/.

Residents need a family number and client number to sign up for recreation programs. Those looking to register are encouraged to get their numbers before registration day by calling 416-396-7378.

Quotes:

"We know how important it is to provide kids and families access to camps as they not only provide a form of relief for parents but for children they are critical in their development. By providing both an in-person and virtual option, we are giving families the option to have children participate in spring break camps that fit within their lifestyle and their comfort level. I want to thank staff for adapting to the public health guidelines and for creating new programming that is safe and healthy for all involved including for kids and staff.” - Mayor John Tory

“Our CampTO spring break initiative offers a stimulating camp experience for young people, while also providing necessary childcare for parents and employment opportunities for young people. CampTO is only possible because City staff have made exceptional efforts to create a safe environment where young people can be engaged and entertained over this April’s school break.”

- Deputy Mayor Michael Thompson (Scarborough Centre), Chair of the Economic and Community Development Committee
