Planting events took place at five parks across the city including Earl Bales Park, Centennial Park, Humber Park West, Sun Valley (in the lower Don Valley), and McCowan District Park.
"Trees are one of the most important features of our natural environment. As citizens of Toronto it is our responsibility to protect, maintain and grow our urban forests and maintain natural spaces," said Councillor Paula Fletcher. "We are proud to note that since 1999 approximately 180,000 trees and shrubs have been planted through the Volunteer Tree Planting program."
Trees Across Toronto is a Live Green Toronto initiative. The program is coordinated by Parks, Forestry and Recreation and supported by 2009 Urban Forest sponsors: The Canadian National Exhibition, Enbridge, HSBC Bank Canada, Lomco, Standard Life, Sunshine Landscaping, Toronto Hydro, Toronto Parking Authority and the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation.
There are many ways for residents to support tree planting in Toronto. Those who are interested may wish to consider making a charitable donation to Trees Across Toronto. Visit http://www.toronto.ca/parks/tat/ or call 416-397-5178.
