Update on the city's plan to address poor road conditions on Unwin Avenue.
I have heard from many of you about the terrible state of Unwin Avenue.
I also went down to see it for myself - what a mess!
Transportation staff have been actively monitoring Unwin and have now devised a plan to address what is, in fact, a very complex situation.
You can read the plan here.
For context, the ground under the road, which in many places is at the same level as Lake Ontario, is saturated.
Drainage is almost nonexistent due to the high water table and the large volume of snowmelt runoff this year. It doesn’t help that there are no sewers on Unwin.
Despite 510 tonnes of gravel materials put down in February, there has been no significant improvement.
Immediate actions include removing standing water, improving drainage, and regrading. Temporary surface stabilization and patch repairs will be completed where conditions permit.
In May, construction crews are expected to mobilize to complete road resurfacing.
These repairs will not fix the underlying conditions, but should help to make it more passable.
