Hands Off Our City

The provincial Ford Government is planning to reduce Toronto wards from 47 to 25, cutting the number of City Councillors in half.

The ward boundaries for the current City election (we moved from 44 to 47) were discussed for two years, approved by City Council, and were upheld in an Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) challenge and also by the Superior Court.

It was a shock when the newly elected Ford Government, without consultation, introduced this legislation to change the City of Toronto Act (COTA) and the Municipal Elections Act (MEA) to alter the size and composition of Toronto City Council and School Boards in the middle of the current municipal election.

No matter your opinion on the size of Toronto City Council, this is an unprecedented abuse of democracy and government power.

Trustee Jennifer Story and I are hosting an emergency community meeting on Wednesday, August 8th to discuss the impact Bill 5 will have on our community and our City. All are welcome to attend.
