Council Highlights - March 5-7, 2012

Welcome back from March Break!  We've all been hard at work at City Hall and in the community and I'm excited to share some updates with you:

  • You can read in detail all the Council highlights here: http://www.toronto.ca/council_highlights/, and I've included some key developments below:
  • Change to Toronto Transit Commission: I voted with Council to reform the Toronto Transit Commission with 7 Councillors and 4 citizens.  Councillor Karen Stintz will be the chair, with Councillors Maria Augimeri, Raymond Cho, Josh Colle, Glenn De Baeremaeker, Peter Milczyn, and John Parker joining the commission.
  • Permit fees for sports fields: Councillor Doucette and I put forward a motion to have staff offer solutions to offer relief to sports groups struggling to pay the new sports fees at the next Council meeting on April 10, so everyone can continue to play this season.
  • Request for exemption from trade agreement: I voted with Council to ask to exempt Toronto from the trade agreement under negotiation with the EU, so Toronto can support the local economy and jobs, protect the environment, and provide services as we see fit.
  • Toronto workforce strategy: Council endorsed Working as One: A Workforce Development Strategy for Toronto to improve and integrate employment services in Toronto
  • Protection of groundwater purity: Council directed staff to make recommendations to improve soil-testing methods and improve the quality of our groundwater
