Chinatown East archway reaches construction milestone

Toronto Mayor David Miller and Councillor Paula Fletcher (Ward 30 Toronto Danforth) today joined Madam Zhu Tao-Ying, Consul General of China, and Mr. Dale Cheung, President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Toronto East, to mark the completion of the foundation of the Zhong Hua Men archway near Gerrard Street and Broadview Avenue.

The Zhong Hua Men archway is being built in the tradition of archways that stand as a symbol of welcome at the entrance to market areas in China and in Chinatowns around the world. When completed, the archway will stand almost 13 metres tall and feature engraved Chinese messages of goodwill and wisdom. It will also incorporate a sculpture that pays tribute to the Chinese workers who were instrumental in building the railways that spurred the economic development of Toronto and Canada.

Mayor Miller said, “The Zhong Hua Men archway will stand as a testament to the courage and talent of Chinese Canadians who are building our great city and country.” Mayor Miller also noted that the archway project embodies, in many respects, a number of the principles inherent in the Agenda for Prosperity, Toronto’s economic prospectus that, through a framework of collaboration, networks and aligned actions, fosters private and public investment in Toronto’s economy.

The Zhong Hua Men archway is a joint project of the City of Toronto and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Toronto East. The people of China, through the Chinese consulate in Toronto, contributed the two lion statues that are already on the site. The Toronto Parking Authority provided the land for the archway.

A celebration to mark the completion of the archway is expected to take place in spring 2009.
