Cell Service for all TTC Passengers by October

Wireless coverage across the entire TTC system, including tunnels, will be required by the end of 2026.

The federal government announced that by October 3rd all telecoms must provide voice, text and data service on the existing TTC network that's currently accessible to only some wireless customers.

Wireless coverage across the entire TTC system, including tunnels, will be required by the end of 2026.

This is an important step that will enhance TTC service and transit users' experience. It also will help keep passengers safe. Given recent TTC safety concerns, this is welcome news.

While all wireless customers can currently call 911, it's only available in areas with a mobile signal. This means 911 calls can't be placed from most tunnels outside the downtown core.

Expanded cellular service can also help improve passenger safety beyond 911 access. Cell service allows passengers to receive incident and service alerts and use emergency texting services if it's not safe to call 911.

This is why I moved an amendment to a motion on TTC safety at City Council in March to ask the TTC Board to report on barriers to full cellphone service across the entire subway system.

Being able to connect with emergency services along with loved ones while on the TTC helps passengers feel safe and confident in using public transit.

Beyond October, cellular carriers must provide cell service to all TTC stations within six months of signing a commercial agreement to use the existing Rogers-owned network. Telecoms must then provide service to 80 percent of tunnels within two years and full system coverage by the end of 2026.
